Understanding Your Salary Components
🏠 Basic Salary
The core fixed component, typically 40–50% of monthly CTC. PF, Gratuity, Bonus, and HRA are all calculated as a percentage of Basic.
🏡 HRA (House Rent Allowance)
50% of Basic for metro cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata), 40% for non-metros. HRA is exempt from income tax subject to actual rent paid.
🏦 PF (Provident Fund)
Employee and employer each contribute 12% of Basic, capped at ₹1,800/month when basis is capped at ₹15,000. PF is a retirement benefit.
🏥 ESIC
Applies only when gross ≤ ₹21,000/month. Employee pays 0.75%, employer pays 3.25%. Covers health insurance and disability benefits.
🎁 Gratuity
4.81% of Basic per month. It is part of CTC but paid as a lump sum after 5 years of service. It is an employer cost, not a monthly credit.
💰 Statutory Bonus
8.33% of salary, calculated on ₹7,000/month or the applicable state minimum wage — whichever is higher. For example, if state minimum wage is ₹15,000, bonus = 8.33% × ₹15,000 = ₹1,250/month. Payable under the Payment of Bonus Act only when gross salary is ₹21,000/month or below.
⚡ Special Allowance
The residual component — whatever remains after Basic, HRA, Medical, and Conveyance are allocated. Fully taxable.
🏢 Professional Tax
State-level tax; maximum ₹2,500/year. Applicable in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, AP, West Bengal, etc. Not applicable in Delhi, UP, Haryana.

How is in-hand salary calculated from CTC in India?▼
In-hand = CTC minus Employer PF (12% of basic, capped at ₹15,000 basis), Employer ESIC (3.25% if gross ≤ ₹21,000), Gratuity (4.81% of basic), and Bonus. From Gross, deduct Employee PF (12%), Employee ESIC (0.75%), and Professional Tax. The result is your Net In-Hand monthly salary.
What is the PF deduction rate in India 2026?▼
Both employer and employee contribute 12% of basic salary to PF. The deduction is typically capped on a basis of ₹15,000/month — so the maximum employee PF deduction is ₹1,800/month. You can contribute more voluntarily (VPF), but the statutory minimum is 12% of ₹15,000.
Who is eligible for ESIC deduction?▼
ESIC applies when gross salary is ₹21,000/month or below. Employee contributes 0.75% and employer contributes 3.25% of gross. For employees earning above ₹21,000/month, ESIC does not apply.
How is HRA calculated?▼
HRA is typically 50% of basic salary in metro cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata) and 40% in non-metro cities. This is the standard structure, but your employer's policy may differ. Adjust the HRA % in the calculator's settings panel.
What is gratuity and when is it paid?▼
Gratuity is 4.81% of basic salary per month (equivalent to 15 days × basic per year). It is part of CTC but is only paid to the employee after 5 years of continuous service. Before 5 years, you forfeit the accumulated gratuity unless the company has a more generous policy.
What is the difference between CTC and gross salary?▼
Gross salary = Basic + HRA + Allowances (what is credited before deductions). CTC = Gross + Employer PF + Employer ESIC + Gratuity + Bonus. CTC is always higher than gross because it includes employer-side statutory contributions that are never credited to your bank account.
How is statutory bonus calculated under the Payment of Bonus Act?▼
Statutory bonus is 8.33% of the capped salary basis — ₹7,000/month (or the applicable state minimum wage, whichever is higher). Even if an employee earns ₹18,000/month, the bonus is still calculated on ₹7,000: 8.33% × ₹7,000 = ₹583/month. Bonus is only payable when gross salary is ₹21,000/month or below. Employees earning above ₹21,000 are not eligible.
Is Professional Tax applicable across all Indian states?▼
No. Professional Tax (PT) is a state-level tax and is levied only in certain states like Maharashtra (max ₹2,500/year), Karnataka (₹2,400/year), Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal, and a few others. States like Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, and UP do not levy PT. Set PT to 0 in settings if your state does not apply it.
How much in-hand salary for ₹6 LPA CTC?▼
For ₹6 LPA CTC with standard structure (50% basic, PF capped at ₹15,000), the approximate monthly in-hand is ₹43,947. This assumes no ESIC (gross exceeds ₹21,000) and zero Professional Tax. Use the calculator above for your exact figures.
How much in-hand salary for ₹10 LPA CTC?▼
For ₹10 LPA CTC with standard structure, the approximate monthly in-hand is ₹74,447. Gross is approximately ₹76,247 with PF of ₹1,800 as the only deduction (ESIC does not apply above ₹21,000). Adjust the calculator for your actual policy.
